MARCH 30TH 2016:

'MYSTERIOUS ORIGINS'

WITH MODERATOR:

Roger Gastman

FEATURING ARTIST:

Kristofferson San Pablo / Vacancy Projects

ARTIST STATEMENT:

In my latest body of work, I present a specific reassignment of my ongoing study of 1990s cultural agency as its imagery pertains to power and repetition in contemporary painting and culture.  Pulled from the treasury of cultural land-marking is the alternative life I have reformatted in my drawings, paintings & installations, recasting key elements and removing others, while emphasizing the (over saturated) unconscious repetition of status and changeability in visual terms.

In a combination of influences such as childhood television shows such as The Simpsons and the saturated/shaky hand-drawn nature of the1990s MTV era aesthetics, art history’s ongoing influence also seeps through the media culture cracks.  My interests in artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Richard Prince, David Hockney and Karen Kilimnik become transparent in this recent body of work, as well as my love for the painting styles of 17th century French painter Francois Boucher and Spanish painter Francisco Goya.

My newest works deal with the reassignment or removal of known iconography in popular imagery (Nirvana’s Nevermind album cover, The Simpsons, etc.), they rely on the underground/bootlegged versions of media milestones to transform the conditions in which they were previously used.  By removing & adjusting specific properties to create a gap where certainty would typically exist, a space opens to further develop my interest in appropriation as practice, while supporting my efforts and interest in variation in painting.   With this iconic remixing of the popular imagery, whether once met with approval or rebellion during their original circulation, have now become emblematic within the tradition of painting.
